Borrelia: A genus of gram-negative, anaerobic, helical bacteria, various species of which produce RELAPSING FEVER in humans and other animals.

Both are transmitted via ticks. Borrelia that cause Lyme disease are collectively known as Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato. B. burgdorferi sensu lato currently includes at least 18 known species of Borrelia. Canine cases of relapsing fever (RF) borreliosis have been described in Israel and the USA, where two RF species, Borrelia turicatae and Borrelia hermsii, can cause similar clinical signs to the Borrelia persica in dogs and cats reported from Israel, including fever, lethargy, anorexia, thrombocytopenia, and spirochetemia.

Borrelia recur- Relapsing fever (RF) is a disease caused by several spirochetes of the genus Borrelia (Cutler, 2006). Relapsing fever borrelioses are characterized by recurrent febrile episodes and spirochetemia. Currently, two categories of RF are known to affect human beings. Louse-borne relapsing fever (LBRF) is an epidemic disease with a fascinating history from Hippocrates’ times, through the 6th century ‘Yellow Plague’, to epidemics in Ireland, Scotland and England in the 19th century and two large Afro-Middle Eastern pandemics in the 20th century. In relapsing fever transmitted by ticks, tetracycline or erythromycin 500 mg orally every 6 hours is given for 5 to 10 days. For louse-transmitted relapsing fever, a single 500-mg oral dose of either drug is effective.

Relapsing fever is a vector-borne disease caused by infection with   Relapsing fever (FR) is caused by spirochetes of the genus Borrelia, transmitted to humans by arthropod vectors. Tick-borne relapsing fever (TBRF) has been reported in Eurasia and attributed mainly to Borrelia persica, although other entities have also been described.

The Lyme borreliosis group includes Borrelia burgdorferi, B. afzelii, B. garinii, and several other species not associated with human disease. The relapsing fever group includes several species, such as B. hermsii in the Nearctic ecologic region and B. persica in the Palearctic, that cause endemic relapsing fever in humans (2). The known
